Explore the Area

Val D'Orcia is one of the most beautiful landscapes in Italy with endless fields, fantastic viewpoints, picturesque cypress avenues, beautiful panoramic roads and enchanting villages.

Bagno Vignoni

The ancient village of Bagno Vignoni is located in the Val d’Orcia Natural Park. Thanks to the Via Francigena (which was the main route followed by pilgrims in antiquity who went to Rome), these thermal waters were found and have been used since Roman times. At the heart of the village is the “Square of sources”, namely a rectangular tank, of 16th-century origin, which contains the original source of water that comes from the underground aquifer of volcanic origins.

Montalcino

The hill upon which Montalcino sits has probably been settled since Etruscan times and is first mentioned in historical documents in 814 AD. The town takes its name from a variety of oak trees that once covered the terrain. The very high site of the town offers stunning views over the Asso, Ombrone and Arbia valleys of Tuscany, dotted with silvery olive orchards, vineyards, fields and villages. The lower slopes of the Montalcino hill itself are dominated by highly productive vines and olive orchards.

Pienza

Pienza was rebuilt from a village called Corsignano, which was the birthplace (1405) of Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, a Renaissance humanist born into an exiled Sienese family, who later became Pope Pius II. Once he became Pope, he had the entire village rebuilt as an ideal Renaissance town. Intended as a retreat from Rome, it represents the first application of humanist urban planning concepts, creating an impetus for planning that was adopted in other Italian cities and eventually spread to other European centers.

Etruscans, Montepulciano and Pitigliano

Etruscans, Pitigliano, and Montepulciano According to legend, Montepulciano was founded by the Etruscan King Lars Porsena of Chiusi; recent findings prove that a settlement was already in existence in the 4th-3rd centuries BC. In Roman times, it was the seat of a garrison guarding the main roads of the area. Pitigliano, another town with deep Etruscan roots, showcases Etruscan caves and necropolises. Montepulciano is a major producer of food and drink. Renowned for its pork, cheese, “pici” pasta, lentils, and honey, it is known worldwide for its wine. Connoisseurs consider its Vino Nobile among Italy’s best.
